Beating the Ho-Hums

Let's face it. Winter is looooooong. Especially if you live up here in the North like me. I think I've glimpsed the sun maybe twice since November. But snow? Now that is a constant. Everything is cold. Dead. Slushy. Muddy.

And yes, I'll admit, pretty beautiful for the 2.5 seconds that the white, fluffy stuff is fresh:)

When these long days pile up like the snow outside my door, it's easy to start feeling down. So today I want to think about things that make me happy. Like:

Fresh fruit. It means summer is here. Summer makes me happy.

The Beach. It means it must be summer. Summer makes me happy.

Green Grass. It means it's summer. And my son is a teen. Now he can mow it. That all makes me happy.

Smiling. Because it just makes me happy. (Yes. I know. Buddy doesn't immediately make you think of summer, but hey, it's still winter and this is my attempt to roll with it.)

How are you staying joyful these days?

  1. Okay I so needed this today. I definitely had a "ho-hum" sort of weekend...just blah, even though it was actually pretty productive. But yeah...I needed a reason to rise above the winter blues. (I always love winter at the start, but it kinda gets to me a couple months in.) Thanks for the Monday smile and the reminder that summer is coming. :)

    1. It IS coming. Really, truly, it is. I love winter at the start too, right up through Christmas. Then, not so much. But I'm a Michigander, so there's not much to do about it but just accept the buckets of snow! And try to find a laugh along the way:)

  2. Timely post Susan. I was feeling it this morning, even though I just got back from getting a sunshine break. I am starting to crack under the pressure of knowing we're not close to spring yet. So what to do? For one, I need to hit the gym tonight, those endorphins help! And I'm going to get some of those Mrs. Meyers Lemon & Verbena cleaning supplies and clean my kitchen. Because for some reason, the sparkly smell of lemons perks me up, and having a clean kitchen helps too. If I have to be stuck inside, then I need to make a list of things to tackle inside so I don't feel trapped, but instead like I used my inside time to free up my summer for outside time. Smiling is always good too!

    1. Exactly! And I second the gym time. Trudging to the snow to get there, not so much. But the endorphins and strength are a great pay-off.

  3. Fresh fruit, yum! And flip-flops, that always reminds me of summer. It's snowing pretty good out there right now, and it's cold! I've been burning happy scented candles that smell like summer to get me through :)

The scented candles I never thought of! Great idea:)

  4. We haven't had an extreme winter here in the Central Valley of California, but it does get cold in the evenings. Usually in the 30's, but it's been warming up to the 60's and low seventies during the day. We just had a bit of rain on Thursday and Friday (the first rain in 2 months). Looks like a definite drought situation, if things don't change. We're forecast for high 50's this week, but no rain.

Anyway, I haven't really had the ho-hums, but I love everyone else's suggestions. Lots of great ideas! :)

It'll be spring and summer before we know it. 😃
